Aloha
Ad 2 Presidents,
Okie…here’s the info on
the Student ADDY category as proposed
to all Ad 2 conference attendees at
our business meeting on Sunday, June
13, 2004
This is a little complicated and may
be a little confusing (especially to
those who were not present at the meeting),
so please bear with me as I try to explain
this again via e-mail. I’ve also
attached a summary sheet + Addy rules/
categories form which I need for all
of you to read and advise if you have
any questions.
Situation:
In the past, National Ad 2 (and local
Ad 2 chapters on the local level) had
sponsored the National Ad 2 Creative
Competition. Basically, we gave away
a $1,000 award + travel expenses + conf
registration to one deserving ad student
with the most creative work (they sent
in their work to the local chapters
who forward the entries to us).
This year, the AAF’s ADDY Committee
voted to have a Student category in
the National ADDYs. This has never been
done on a national level before. As
you can guess, this would have been
Very similar to our Creative Competition.
As such, the ADDY committee approached
National Ad 2 to work on launching this
category together. On May 29, 2004,
the National Ad 2 BOD voted in favor
of combining our National Ad 2 Creative
Competition with the Student ADDY’s
and sponsoring a “Best of Show”
Student ADDY on the national level.
Gimme the Details:
Attached are more details on how this
benefits YOUR local Ad 2 club.
As you will see, the ADDY committee
has drafted up a proposal that benefits
both National Ad 2 as well as local
Ad 2 chapters. As an Ad 2 representative,
I can assure you that they’ve
been more than generous with us.
Each Ad 2 chapter has 1st right of refusal
to hold the Student ADDY competition
on a local level.
You could be making $10-14 on Each entry,
depending on your district structure.
Your local Ad 2 club will award the
prizes based on the attached categories
(see PDF)
All your local entries will be forwarded
to the National Student ADDY category
and National Ad 2 will award a “Best
of Show” to the best piece of
work.
Just to put things in perspective---
smaller markets like Roanoke and Lincoln
have been able to generate app. 300
entries each. At that rate, Ad 2 Roanoke,
for example, could be making app. $3000.
This could even be a major fundraiser
for you.
BUT you guys NEED to do your part.
I highly recommend that each of you,
as President, sit down or call up your
District Governor (SOON) to discuss
your involvement with the Student ADDY
category. Indicate your interest to
hold the competition and work out a
fee structure with them.
REMEMBER--- the clause has been added
into the proposal where Ad 2 chapters
have first right of refusal to do this.
If you do NOT take advantage of this,
my feeling is that it’ll be Very
hard for your club to jump back on the
bandwagon in the future.
There’re a few reasons why you
Should do this:
1) Your club has the potential to make
a lot of money on this.
2) It’ll give you the chance to
establish Good contacts with the local
colleges and this will open up the door
for you to recruit student members
3) It’s an easy sell--- every
ad agency is familiar with the ADDY
awards. Every student who wants to get
into advertising wants an ADDY on his/her
resume/ portfolio. This should be much
easier than trying to get entries for
the Creative Competition
As I mentioned earlier, this was negotiated
so YOU guys have the advantage. As such,
let’s make use of this intelligently.
This is what I recommend you do:
1) Meet with your District Governor
or at least call him/her. If you do
not know Who your DG is, let me know.
I’ll e-troduce you to them
2) Establish a fee structure with him/her.
Read the attached. You should be making
$10-14 if the minimum $20 entry fee
is established.
3) WORK for it. Promote it to schools,
send out press releases to local newspapers,
college papers etc. You Cannot sit there
and wait for entries to come flowing
in…IF you do not promote this
well, there’s a chance your district
governor will just take it back and
either run it themselves OR hand it
over to the senior ad clubs. This is
usually an irreversible process…don’t
burn that bridge
4) Most importantly--- remember to keep
a Good working relationship with your
District Governor. I cannot stress that
enough. I know there’re DGs out
there who are easier to work with than
others…but don’t forget
that they are still your DGs…let’s
try to work with them rather than against
them.
5) IF ANY of you have ANY problems when
negotiating this with your DGs or senior
ad clubs, please let me know immediately.
I can’t help you if I don’t
know there’s a problem. And there’s
a reason why I’m here…use
and abuse me…
I know this is a long e-mail…and
probably confusing for some of you who’ve
just stepped on board. But I hope the
e-mail + attached will help clarify
some of that.
If you need me to explain this to you
one-on-one…please let me know
I’d like for each of you to advise
me on whether or not your club will
be participating in this. I’ll
then send an initial/ introductory e-mail
to your DGs on your behalf, so they
know we’re all working together
on this
I look forward to hearing from all of
you
THANKS
Joce
